Heres another one I thought I would try. As everybody knows by now if I can't find it I will try and build it. So I needed an old time tank car to justify the oil consumption by the new 80 ton Shay as for which the new Climax had to be returned to the factory for defects in the drive train and Bachman no longer manufactures the HO Climax.Guess The Highlander just wasn't meant to have a Climax engine running its rails. So: All the tankers I have are a lot newer than the one I needed so once again scratching back on memory as a child I remember old oil cars passing by on the main street crossing in front of my moms car while she was in town shopping, You know the ones that were coated with tar on the outside to protect against rust and you could see the cracks in the tar. I thought it would be fun to try and make one so here we go.

The Chicago and West Coast Railroad is a display layout representing passenger train travel in the 1950s. I model the seven major railroads that ran from Chicago to the major cities on the west coast. The picture shows Union Station in Chicago with the seven big name trains ready to head west. Now this is not really prototypical but my room is only 11x20 feet, unfortunately I do not have enough room to include a west coast yard at this time. I will explain more about the operation on my detail page but I have one very long main line which I can switch to three independent loops for some very interesting passenger operations.

The layout began after I became disabled in a 15 x 30 room my son made for me in his warehouse. Several years ago I made a small layout for my grandson for Christmas. After Christmas I began another layout for my own enjoyment. When my son gave me this room he wanted me to incorporate both layouts into one big layout. This was just a design from my imagination that takes some ideas from my past experiences and places where I lived. I grew up in PA and lived in NY. The town is a town we lived in in NY. The mountains on the backdrops remind me of the mountains in NY and PA.

I made some models from Walthers during recovering from open-heart surgery and these are the different major scenes I incorporated in the total layout. I hope you enjoy the pictures from the C an L Railroad.

Freelanced layout with C&O power. NCE PowerPro DCC system. Phase 1 is 6-1/2' x 21' section in the lounge area of the basement. It is about 90% scenery completed. It depicts the eastern terminus of the City of Bridgewater, a fictious city with a large seaport and terminal yard. Walls have Backdrop Warehouse photomurals (BG-CM105-A&B). Phase 2 is under construction in another room that is accessed via a tunnel through the wall from the lounge area (Phase 1) into a 16' x 20' room (Phase 2). This area will consist of a full steam/diesel servicing facility and a large classification yard. It will also have several industries including an oil refinery. Benchwork is complete and mainline is in. Also there will be a 2-1/2' x 8' peninsula in the center of the room with a quaint fishing village serviced by rail. The surrounding walls have Blue Ridge & Appalachian Mts. photomurals from Backdrop Warehouse installed. A seperate 9' x 15' staging area is located in a third room. This has 9 storage/staging tracks. Also the mainline and branchline runs through the staging area for additional run time. All staging is contolled by Tortoise machines that select all routes without having to enter the staging area, but staging is fully accessible if need be and has position for a mole.

I'm modeling the late 1970's Chessie System in western Pa. Loosely based on the area from Connellsville to Johnstown, focusing on a greatly modified S&C sub.

As most of us do, my layout is based on the memories I have as a kid. The S&C runs behind my house and terminates in Johnstown with (at that time)the largest customer being Bethlehem Steel. So the freight on my railroad reflects this, with lots of coal, 4 axle power and plenty of color! MY GOSH! What a difference the back drops make!!!

Name of Layout San Diego 1908
Click here for my detail page & Slide Show

San Diego 1908 was a 4’ x 10’ HO model representing the downtown San Diego, California waterfront as it looked one hundred years ago. This area encompassed the colorful “Stingaree” district, with its saloons and parlor houses, along with the complex of railroad tracks radiating from the foot of the 5th Street wharf. A dock railway, several short-line steam, electric, and trolley lines, and the Santa Fe railroad all converged there. As well as selectively compressed representations of real buildings, researched from old photos and Sanborn maps, the model featured tableaus of contemporary life— including a Women’s Christian Temperance Union march and a celebration of the arrival of the U.S. Navy’s Great White Fleet. The model also featured a train of open-sided “picnic cars” bringing San Diegans down to the waterfront. San Diego 1908 was a great place to display a much-loved 45-year collection of HO models. A cross-country move in late 2008 ended this version of the layout, which now sits patiently packed away waiting for its new incarnation.

My layout is modelled in the late 1950's-Early 1960's when the Canadain National Railroad was switching from steam to diesel. This allows both steam and diesel to co-exist. The layout is 15' X 11' in an around the room configuration. there is a drop leaf at one end. The system is DCC controlled with a Ramtraxx system(now defunct)similar to System One. the turntable is a Walthers Cornerstone 90' controller by a special indexing computer control. The system is a retirement project which I work on only when time is available. Enjoy the photos. I will update them as work progresses.

I don't think I will ever finish, its just one of those hobby's that breeds ideas. The Abingdon Branch is the culmination of several goals and dreams. I wanted to build a layout that would achieve the following objectives: be something I could do with my children, be a project that friends would want to join in building using what ever their skills are, would allow multiple people to operate simultaneously, would be inexpensive to build, would be modular, would be done with excellence, would be featured in Model Railroader and other similar magazine, would use recycled materials and be fun! The track design and scenic local were inspired by a book called, 'The Last Steam Railroad in America' by O. Winston Link. When completed this layout will include a double track main line, the Abingdon Branch, a wye from St. Mary's, Ohio and a secondary branch line. I also hope to add animation through a working car ferry, a working coal loader and a rotary coal car dump. The era will be set in the mid to late 1940's.

All Aboard the Monongahela & Horseshoe Valley Railroad (M&HVRR), a former spur line of the Western Maryland Railway!!! Brief Layout Backstory: In February 2005, I tore out my old model train layout that I had since I was younger (just a hunk of grass paper covered plywood, "E-Z Track", a few buildings and a couple trains). I had found a plan in a magazine to rebuild a professional looking new layout in three months or less. FIVE YEARS LATER, I finally am almost finished with that project. Of course, along the way I ended up scrapping the "new" layout before it was ever finished, and purchased an older gentleman's collection and decided to augment it instead. His layout was 11'x9', and I decided to add an abbreviated portion of the "new" layout...making a complete city-country-small town, point-to-point AND continuous circuit layout. Although many museums have layouts, this is quite possibly the first layout of an operating (yet fictional) museum/tourist railroad!

The Face Creek Wichita is a modern shortline that operates over the BNSF. From Wichita, KS to Face Creek, KS the line runs for 50 miles. Operations include East and Westbound Transcon trains, Wichita to Kansas City AMTRAK service and shortline mixed and unit freights. Yard operations in North Wichita and Emporia (Staging) for FC@W and BNSF traffic. Stephen and Cynthia Priest, Chuck Hitchcock, David Barrow and Pelle Soeborg have all been major influences in modeling the ATSF/BNSF. Living in Derby, KS gives me a window to the west and east with several legs of the trancon all within ear shot. The layout can change from 1985 ATSF to 1998 BNSF by changing the vehicles, rolling stock and motive power.
