The Susquehanna Valley and Gulf Summit Railway was begun about two years ago. While the SVGS is not my dream layout, I wanted to create something with a variety of visual settings that would allow for creativity and realistic visual detail. Hence, I’ve created a rather fanciful and fictional layout that incorporates structural and street lighting that automatically come on when the room lighting is turned off, traffic lights that automatically change in the town of Summit, and automatic sound effects (i.e., diesel horn when a train passes over a section of track, running water of the Susquehanna River, birds chirping over the daytime landscape, crickets chirping over the night time landscape, a flickering, raging fire in a burning building with fire engine sirens in the distance, a grade crossing bell and the clickety-clack of wheels, and an automatic station stop in Susquehanna with a customized automatic boarding announcement—“The Susquehanna Valley and Gulf Summit Express now boarding. All Aboard!” For the transitional lighting from day to night, I used an optical sensing power pack designed for use on garden pathway lights.

An N-scale 4x4 layout suspended from my garage ceiling. Two mainlines that can be switched so one train can run the entire route as one mainline. All farm and mountain scenery. Layout named "Jared's rock" after my 8 yr. old grandson found a rock he liked during construction and asked if I would include it in the layout scenery. His rock is between the barn and the tree, but for the sake of history I named the entire hill "Jared's rock".

There can be no doubt where one is when you look at my model railroad. Sheer canyon sides and towering snow-capped mountains on two sides give way to high arid desert on another… It’s the Rockies and Arizona! To build it I created a whole new County in Arizona! It’s Boyle County, after a dear friend whose invitation to the South Western USA was how I fell in love with the landscape and rekindled my decades old love affair with the mighty Santa Fe. The model is built on four walls of a 12foot square room. There are two main levels, the upper level being an integrated part of the main level scenery on 2 and a half of the walls. Five Railroads are actually depicted on the whole layout. First the El Segundo and Las Rocas Railroad. Secondly The Santa-Fe has running rights over the ES&LR line from Las Rocas to Shriver Canyon. Third the SMR&JCR a Rocky Mountain short line from Las Rocas to the lumber town of San Miguel. Fourth the ET&RR a Preserved Tourist Line from Shriver Canyon And Fifth the CC&TLR A narrow gauge Lumber Line to San Miguel’s Mill.

N Gauge Tri Level Layout. The Mountain Pacific Railroad will be modeled to be a short line which will connect to the Great Northern Railroad in the Rocky Mountains. It is planned to eventually run the railroad remotely using the cameras installed in the Rotary Snow Plows to make our way through the spectacular scenery.

Here are some highlights of my layout. Ive tried to stay within the late 1800's but has been some what difficult because I can not find but a few horse drawn wagons. Most wagons such as stagechoch and hearse are in ho only.

The area covered was the North East portion of Minnesota, referred to as the Iron Range. It ranged from Superior, Wisconsin on thee east, to Grand Rapids, Minnesota on the west. Connections were to Seattle, Minneapolis/St. Paul, and Winnipeg. The time frame is from the late 40’s to 1970. so as to feature the GN orange and green diesel scheme, plus steam that was just before the BN merger Other prototypes included the “Fallen Flags” of NP, CB&Q, and SP&S, and the DM&IR to be a major part of the layout. There is also interchange with the CNW, DW&P, Milwaukee Road, and SOO Line.

The layout was in a room 15 feet by 21 feet in a “M” shape. And integrated four NTRAK modules with the permanent layout. Double and single track main lines enabled point to point and continous running over two levels plus separate staging yards.

Control was DC with 40 blocks with five walk around throttles, and a Magoffin Sound System.

Total track laid was about 1100 feet.

Name of Layout Wolf Run

Wolf Run is a freelance model loosely based on the Alaska Railroad. Many, many years ago I had an HO layout that my dad and I built in our basement. Through the years I remained fascinated by model railroading but other interests occupied my time. Several years ago I began collecting N scale rolling stock. At the time I was a dog musher living outside of Fairbanks, Alaska. I wanted to be able to actually RUN the locos I had collected. I had a shed that I used for cooking fish for the dogs during winter, but it was unused in the summer. So each summer I would set up a sheet of plywood and play with my trains through the long summer nights. Lacking space for a permanent layout, I decided that some sort of snap track was the ticket. I chose Kato track for several reasons - it has integrated roadbed, there is no visible switch motor for the turnouts and there is a wide assortment of different radii and other track pieces available. A couple of years ago I sold my kennel, retired from mushing and moved to California and began fantasizing about my Dream Layout.

The Ridgeway Keeler Railroad is a ficticious N scale railroad, somewhere in the USA, circa 1958. It is a research project I started on to see just what could be done using Lifelike Power-Loc track. For those of you not familiar with this product, it has just ONE track radius, 9 3/4 inch. Only one size of turnout, and the diverging route has that same small radius in it. The layout is an oversized card table, 3 feetx4 feet. The track plan is a modified Madison Central from the pages of Modelrailroader. My website dedicated to this project is: www.rustyknucklecafe.50megs.com.

Hamilton Junction Railway is my long term project layout. It consists of 4 modules. Module 1 is shown here, and the other 3 are in my garage awaiting trackwork and wiring. It is basically an over/under design, with 2 spurs, one leads to a small yard, and the other to a downtown industrial disctrict. The layout will feature downtown skyscrapers, the TH&B station and the scenic bike path gorge.
