The railways I chose were the Canadian National / Canadian Pacific Railways. The setting is the Montreal to Ottawa route, in the 1959 era when steam and diesel shared the rails. The layout is 10 / 12 x 23ft, maximum 2 1/2% grade and #6 and #8 mainline turnouts and features a harbour, passenger station, small yard, industrial section, downtown area with running trolleys and a staging area in the computer room. There is over 500 ft of track and 300 ft of mainline. Being tall, I chose to have the top of the main benchwork start at 50" above the floor with the second level at 54". The industry and the downtown areas are at 57".

I am going to go back and try to take all the same photos taken in my Highlander main page using the backdrop from Back Drop Warehouse to show the difference from the black and whites I used in most of my shots and the effects that Back Drop Warehouse color photos create. Thanx again Back Drop Warehouse and those who voted. The Highlander.

I think Back Drop Ware House probably has a back drop for most any bodies layout. It took me quite awhile going back and forth from several of the fantastic sceneries available to end up with the one I did. My layout required the rolling hills in the fore ground with some just right size trees up front for trackside effect and still the high rugged mountians in the back ground to give the effect of my lay out up in the mountians. Back Drop Warehouse had the one I needed.

So you are thinking of purchasing some Backdrop Warehouse (BDW) Backdrops. Been there, done that. Yes, I worried, thought all of the negatives, and had some sleepless nights. But, now that I have purchased 9 backdrops and have them all hung, and they are straight, with very few wrinkles, I found that the experience was wonderful. The process was better than I ever thought it could be.

In fact, I have had other issues with this layout that were far worse than hanging these backdrops. I believe that painting the ceiling joists solid flat black was the worst part of building my layout.

Like all other layouts, my layout is very unique. You see, I started with my layout that is 13 x 17 and like any other American male, I found that I needed more space. I built my layout in my John Deere room that is under one corner of our home. Our home is strictly a one level home and has no basement. But, it did have a rather large crawl space that had possibilities. So, for a little over 2 years, I dug the crawl space out, or as my wife, Louanna, says, I mined it out. In the Missouri Ozarks we have a lot of limestone and very little dirt. Yes, I dug out my crawl space and now have an additional 46 x 29 area for a nice addition to the present layout.

Before I go any farther, I need to let you know that I did consult with an area architect and also several general contractors on the process of converting this crawl space to a workable layout area. All of these folks were very informative and thought that I was a little crazy. I told everyone that I was acting like a 12 year old that was digging his way out of jail.

Name of Layout Winter Wonderland
Click here for my detail page & Slide Show

Welcome to a Winter Wonderland. My husband and I started this layout six years ago with only one American Flyer freight train on a 4X8 board which had some crude homemade houses on it. Originally it was set up for the Christmas holidays, usually about a month and then dismantled. It has grown to four American Flyer trains (2 freight and 2 passenger), a 4X8 and 4X10 board, a 4X4 table and a 2X2 tabletop. There is a lighted ceramic village with a business district, ski area, countryside and carnival. Although it is still set up just for the holidays, it now stays up for 6-7 months thanks to its new location on our enclosed porch. This is still a work in progress. We are always reconstructing and adding. This year we added a tunnel and redid the ski slope. The challenge this year was adding a background that was not permanent. It took a while, but we finally devised a frame that can be taken down and stored for the summer.

The layout began after I became disabled in a 15 x 30 room my son made for me in his warehouse. Several years ago I made a small layout for my grandson for Christmas. After Christmas I began another layout for my own enjoyment. When my son gave me this room he wanted me to incorporate both layouts into one big layout. This was just a design from my imagination that takes some ideas from my past experiences and places where I lived. I grew up in PA and lived in NY. The town is a town we lived in in NY. The mountains on the backdrops remind me of the mountains in NY and PA.

I made some models from Walthers during recovering from open-heart surgery and these are the different major scenes I incorporated in the total layout. I hope you enjoy the pictures from the C an L Railroad.

Freelanced layout with C&O power. NCE PowerPro DCC system. Phase 1 is 6-1/2' x 21' section in the lounge area of the basement. It is about 90% scenery completed. It depicts the eastern terminus of the City of Bridgewater, a fictious city with a large seaport and terminal yard. Walls have Backdrop Warehouse photomurals (BG-CM105-A&B). Phase 2 is under construction in another room that is accessed via a tunnel through the wall from the lounge area (Phase 1) into a 16' x 20' room (Phase 2). This area will consist of a full steam/diesel servicing facility and a large classification yard. It will also have several industries including an oil refinery. Benchwork is complete and mainline is in. Also there will be a 2-1/2' x 8' peninsula in the center of the room with a quaint fishing village serviced by rail. The surrounding walls have Blue Ridge & Appalachian Mts. photomurals from Backdrop Warehouse installed. A seperate 9' x 15' staging area is located in a third room. This has 9 storage/staging tracks. Also the mainline and branchline runs through the staging area for additional run time. All staging is contolled by Tortoise machines that select all routes without having to enter the staging area, but staging is fully accessible if need be and has position for a mole.

My layout started in 2002 in my basement in Georgia as a 4 x 8 piece of plywood. It has been expanded several times since (even though I said I never needed to enlarge it) and it has been moved to Kansas. It started very simple, flat board --no mountain, etc. and has since expanded in all directions. My friend Don had used a backdrop from Background Warehouse and I decided I needed one to set my layout apart and make it more realistic.

I'm modeling the late 1970's Chessie System in western Pa. Loosely based on the area from Connellsville to Johnstown, focusing on a greatly modified S&C sub.

As most of us do, my layout is based on the memories I have as a kid. The S&C runs behind my house and terminates in Johnstown with (at that time)the largest customer being Bethlehem Steel. So the freight on my railroad reflects this, with lots of coal, 4 axle power and plenty of color! MY GOSH! What a difference the back drops make!!!

I have loved trains since I was a kid, collected them during my 20's and 30's and now finally decided to dedicate the space in our basement to a permanent layout.

The Seligman and Paulden lines is a large high rail layout of an imaginary railroad built to connect the Santa Fe in northern Arizona with Douglas on the Southern Pacific in southern Arizona. However, due to forces we do not understand, equipment from other railroads frequently show up on the S&P. We are too poor a line to afford our own equiment, so all power is from our connecting roads. A commuter line extends from Douglas to its main suburb, Rock Springs, in the foothills of the mountains. A branch line into the most mountainous area and a coal mining district is presently under construction. On it, trains will leave the main line at Lowell Junction and travel to the town of Lowell where another branch, powered by a Heisler, takes coal cars on another branch to the mines.

This is the Black Diamond Railway which is a 33'x13' O-gauge hi-rail model railroad. The layout has three levels and uses MTH ScaleTrax track and switches and MTH buildings. It took one year to build the room including lighting and shelves, three years to build the original layout and one more year to build the extension around the outside. The trains are from MTH, 3rd Rail, Atlas and Lionel. One MTH Z4000 transformer powers the entire layout which can run from 4 to 8 trains at one time. The MTH DCS system controls the trains, switches, signals and accessories using one MTH TIU and 2-AIU's. The MTH remote is also used to control the TMCC equipped engines. As you can see from my photos, without the backdrops, this layout would just look like trains on a platform in the basement. The backdrops bring the layout to life and provide realism and depth making you feel like you are outside. It helps create the "WOW" factor. They are also excellent for creating realistic photos and videos of your layout and trains.
